Hair Extensions and Hair Loss FAQs

Hair extensions, wigs and hair replacement can get technical very quickly.

Most clients don’t arrive knowing the difference between a mesh system and a Micro-Top, whether they need a closure or frontal, or which extension method makes sense for the hair they have.

That’s fine.

These are the questions that tend to come up before people book, during consultations and sometimes after they’ve gone home and thought of three more.

For detailed questions about extension care, curly extensions or treatment plans, we’ve linked to the relevant guides rather than repeating the same advice here.

If You’re Mainly Trying to Work Out...

  • pricing, deposits or consultations → go to Appointments and Pricing

Choosing the Right Lush Virgin Hair Service

I know what I want my hair to look like, but I have no idea what service to book. Where do I start?

Start with a consultation.

You don’t need to know the technical name of the service. Tell us what is bothering you now and what you would like your hair to look like instead.

If you’re trying to choose between extensions, a topper, a wig or a fitted hair replacement system, seeing the hair properly is far more useful than guessing from photos online.

BOOK A CONSULTATION

Can I discuss more than one hair option at my consultation?

Yes.

If you’re genuinely unsure which direction makes sense, say so.

For example, someone with thinning around the crown may be wondering about extensions, toppers and hair replacement at the same time. The consultation is where we narrow that down.

What should I bring to a consultation?

Bring anything that helps explain the look you want or the way your hair behaves.

Useful things can include:

  • a couple of inspiration photos
  • photos of your current hair if it behaves differently on different days
  • details of previous extensions or hair-loss systems
  • an idea of how you normally style your hair
  • questions about maintenance, washing, sleeping or wearing the hair up

You don’t need to prepare a presentation.

A few photos and a rough idea of what you want are plenty.

What if I’m embarrassed about my hair?

You won’t be the first person to feel that way.

Hair thinning and hair loss can be difficult to talk about, particularly if you’ve spent a long time trying to hide it.

Our job is to look at the practical options available to you, not to judge how your hair looks when you arrive.

Hair Extension Questions

What types of hair extensions does Lush Virgin Hair offer?

Lush Virgin Hair works with several application methods, including wefts, micro-links and I-tips, tape-ins, bonds and sew-in applications.

The useful part of having several methods available is that we don’t have to make one technique fit every head of hair.

EXPLORE HAIR EXTENSIONS

What’s the difference between extensions fitted in rows and extensions fitted individually?

In simple terms:

  • Rows / wefts: more hair is added across a section at once.
  • Individual methods: smaller sections are distributed through the hair one by one.

Wefts sit in rows. I-tips, micro-links and bonds are examples of individually distributed methods.

Neither tells us on its own which one is right for you.

Do you work with hair other than straight extensions?

Yes.

Lush Virgin Hair works with a wide range of textures, including straight, wavy, curly, kinky straight, yaki and textured options.

Texture matters just as much as colour if the aim is a believable blend.

For curls and textured matching, see our Lush Curls page.

EXPLORE LUSH CURLS

Can extensions work with short hair?

They can in some cases.

The main question is whether there is enough natural hair to conceal the attachment and create a believable transition into the added length.

Short hair does not automatically rule extensions out, but it does make the consultation more important.

What is a sew-in with leave-out?

With a leave-out sew-in, part of your natural hair remains out so it can blend with the extension hair, while the rest forms part of the foundation for the sew-in.

The amount left out depends on the style being created.

Can I have a sew-in without leaving my own hair out?

Yes.

Lush Virgin Hair also offers full sew-in options using a lace system, where the natural hair can be braided away rather than relying on leave-out to create the finished style.

What is the difference between a closure and a frontal?

  • Closure: covers a smaller section of the top or front area.
  • Frontal: covers more of the front hairline and gives greater scope around the front.

Which one makes sense depends on the style and how much coverage is needed.

Do closures and frontals come in textured hair?

Yes.

Lush Virgin Hair offers closures and frontals across different textures, including textured hair options, so the lace piece can be matched more naturally with the rest of the hair.

Can Lush Virgin Hair extensions be restyled?

Human hair extensions can offer styling flexibility, including curling and straightening, but heat still needs to be used sensibly.

If you are planning a major colour change or chemical service, speak to the salon first rather than experimenting after fitting.

READ THE HAIR EXTENSION AFTERCARE GUIDE

Extensions, Topper, Wig or Integration?

Option Usually considered when Coverage How it is worn
Hair extensions There is enough natural hair to support and conceal the fitting Adds length or density rather than replacing the whole head Fitted into the natural hair
Topper Thinning is concentrated around the top or crown Partial Sits over the area needing coverage
Wig Full-head coverage is wanted or needed Full Separate full-head hairpiece
Mesh integration More continuous coverage is needed while integrating remaining natural hair Partial to extensive Professionally fitted and maintained
Micro-Top Hair loss or thinning is concentrated around the top of the head Targeted top coverage Fitted system integrating the client’s own hair

None of these options is automatically “better”. The right conversation depends on where the thinning is, how much hair remains and how you want to wear the result.

What’s the difference between a wig, a topper and a hair integration system?

A wig gives full-head coverage. A topper covers a more concentrated area, usually around the top or crown. Integration systems combine added hair with the client’s remaining hair and are designed for more continuous wear.

That is the short version.

The comparison above is usually enough to tell people which questions they need to ask next.

How do I know whether I need extensions or hair replacement?

It usually comes down to whether there is enough hair in the right place to support and conceal an extension fitting.

For example, if the crown is reasonably dense but you want more length or fullness through the ends, extensions may be part of the conversation.

If the issue is concentrated thinning at the top where an extension attachment would be difficult to hide, we would normally look at a different type of solution.

Hair Replacement FAQs

What is mesh integration?

Mesh integration is a hair replacement method where a fine mesh forms a base over the area needing coverage. Additional hair is incorporated while the client’s remaining hair is worked into the system where appropriate.

In practical terms, it is for someone who needs coverage in an area where ordinary extensions may no longer have enough hair to work with.

Is mesh integration the same as wearing a wig?

No.

A wig is a separate full-head hairpiece. A mesh system is professionally fitted and designed for more continuous wear while integrating remaining natural hair where possible.

Living with a mesh system

Do you remove it every night?
No. It is intended to be worn continuously and maintained professionally.

Can you wash it?
Yes, but the washing and scalp-care routine should be explained for the individual system.

Can you sleep in it?
It is designed for everyday wear, including sleep, but comfort and scalp sensitivity still need to be discussed at consultation.

Can my own hair continue to grow underneath a mesh system?

Lush Virgin Hair’s mesh system is designed to allow ongoing hair growth underneath and through the system.

That growth is also one of the reasons maintenance is needed.

Will people be able to tell I’m wearing a hair replacement system?

The aim is a natural-looking result, but we don’t think it is helpful to promise that nobody will ever know.

Colour, density, texture, hairline, placement and styling all affect how believable a fitted system looks.

A realistic consultation is more useful than an “undetectable” guarantee.

Can a mesh system be matched to the length and colour I want?

Yes, those details are discussed as part of the system planning.

Lush Virgin Hair considers factors such as length, thickness and colour when creating the required look.

What is a Micro-Top Hair Replacement System?

A Micro-Top is designed for thinning or hair loss concentrated around the top of the head.

Think of it as targeted coverage for the top rather than a full-head solution.

Lush Virgin Hair’s Micro-Top uses a fine net structure with additional hair while allowing the client’s own hair to be integrated through the system.

How is a Micro-Top attached?

Lush Virgin Hair’s Micro-Top uses small silicone-lined beads to secure the piece while the client’s own hair is integrated through the structure.

Custom options are also available where a different shape or area of coverage is needed.

Can a Micro-Top be customised?

Yes.

Standard option: suitable where the available size and coverage fit the client’s needs.

Custom option: can be adjusted around coverage area, length, volume, colour, texture and base.

Custom work takes longer because the piece is being produced for one person rather than selected from an existing format.

Is a Micro-Top permanent?

No.

It is worn as a fitted system rather than clipped in each morning, but it still needs salon maintenance and periodic removal or refitting.

“Fitted” does not mean “fit it once and forget about it”.

What is a hair topper?

A topper is a partial hairpiece designed to add coverage and density where hair is thinning, often around the top or crown.

Some people prefer a topper precisely because they do not need full-head coverage.

Whether it is the right option depends on the location and extent of thinning and how you want to wear the hair.

Do you offer custom-made wigs?

Yes.

Lush Virgin Hair offers custom-made wig services alongside ready-to-wear options.

The salon works with human hair wigs and offers closure and frontal choices so the finished piece can be planned around the required style and hairline.

Are wigs only for people with medical hair loss?

No.

Lush Virgin Hair supplies wigs for different reasons, including medical hair loss, styling and everyday wear.

Someone looking for a wig during medical treatment may have very different priorities from someone who simply wants another styling option.

What a Salon Consultation Can and Cannot Tell You

We can help with:

  • extension suitability
  • hair replacement options
  • coverage
  • colour and texture matching
  • fitting methods
  • styling practicality
  • salon maintenance
  • cosmetic scalp care

We do not diagnose:

  • alopecia type
  • hormonal hair loss
  • thyroid-related hair loss
  • medication-related hair loss
  • unexplained sudden shedding
  • medical scalp conditions

If something falls outside cosmetic hair care, the right next step is a healthcare professional.

I’m losing my hair. Do I need to know the medical reason before speaking to Lush Virgin Hair?

No.

You can still discuss cosmetic hair replacement options if you do not yet know exactly what is causing the change.

A salon does not diagnose the medical cause of hair loss.

Sudden, unexplained or significant hair loss should be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional.

Can hair replacement cure alopecia or stop hair loss?

No.

Wigs, toppers, Micro-Top systems and mesh integration are cosmetic hair replacement solutions.

They can provide coverage and additional hair, but they do not cure alopecia or treat an underlying medical condition.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Choose a Fitted System

These are the practical questions people sometimes remember after the consultation:

  • How often will I need maintenance?
  • How do I wash it?
  • Can I wear my hair up?
  • What happens when my own hair grows?
  • Can the colour or length be changed later?
  • What happens if an attachment feels uncomfortable?
  • What does removal or refitting involve?
  • What will the ongoing cost be, not just the first fitting?

None of these are awkward questions.

They are exactly the things worth understanding before committing to a fitted system.

Head Spa and Scalp Care

What actually happens during a Head Spa appointment?

Lush Virgin Hair’s Head Spa currently includes five main stages:

  1. Scalp analysis
  2. Aromatherapy
  3. Micro-mist
  4. Massage and shampoo
  5. Hair treatment mask

Different Head Spa options may focus on different scalp and hair concerns.

What is scalp analysis?

Scalp analysis involves looking more closely at the scalp for visible concerns such as dryness, oiliness or product build-up.

It is a cosmetic salon assessment, not a medical diagnosis.

Is a Head Spa only for people with scalp problems?

No.

Some clients are interested in scalp cleansing and care, while others are mainly looking for the treatment and relaxation side of the service.

If you have a specific scalp concern, mention it before the appointment.

Can a Head Spa diagnose why my hair is thinning?

No.

A salon scalp assessment can help guide cosmetic scalp care. It cannot diagnose the medical cause of thinning or hair loss.

What’s the difference between a Head Spa and an ordinary hair treatment?

A Head Spa puts more attention on the scalp as part of the service.

A traditional hair treatment may focus more on the condition and feel of the hair itself.

If you’re unsure which is relevant, tell us whether the concern is mainly the scalp, the hair lengths or both.

Appointments and Pricing

Where is Lush Virgin Hair based?

Lush Virgin Hair is based at Ground Floor, Unit B, Citywest Shopping Centre, Dublin 24.

Check your appointment details before travelling, particularly if you have booked a specific consultation or treatment.

Where can I see current prices?

Use the Price List for current salon pricing.

Some services still need an individual quote because the amount of hair, fitting method or custom work involved can vary.

Why can’t every service have one fixed price online?

Because two appointments with the same service name can involve very different work.

One client may need a relatively small amount of hair for fullness. Another may need significantly more hair, a different method or a custom-made system.

Calling both simply “hair extensions” does not make the work identical.

Is finance available for hair extensions or hair loss systems?

Lush Virgin Hair currently advertises finance options for some hair extension and mesh integration services.

Current terms should always be checked before booking, as finance arrangements can change.

Is a deposit required for a custom hair loss system?

Custom work may require a deposit before the booking or system is confirmed.

Lush Virgin Hair’s current mesh integration information states that a deposit is required after consultation if the client decides to proceed.

Current terms should always be checked at the time of booking.

Can I buy Lush Virgin Hair online without having a salon appointment?

Yes.

Lush Virgin Hair also sells hair, wigs and related products online.

A consultation is more useful when you need fitting advice, matching, hair-loss coverage or help choosing between several services.

Do I have to be experiencing hair loss to visit Lush Virgin Hair?

No.

Lush Virgin Hair works across extensions, wigs, textured hair, hair replacement, scalp care and salon services.

Hair loss is one specialist part of the wider offering.

Still Not Sure What to Book?

That’s probably the easiest question on this page.

You don’t need to work your way through every extension method, wig construction and hair replacement system before contacting us.

Tell us what’s happening with your hair and what you want to change.

We’ll work out which conversation needs to happen next.
